Founded in 2021, the Newport Harbor Girls Flag Football Team has been a force to behold. The players practiced at the high school field by the pool and baseball fields. They played their games at the Great Park in Irvine and were sponsored by Under Armour, Matt Leinart Football and Females in Flag. This original team played in the finals but lost to Woodbridge. The following season (2022/2023) the team won the Pacific League. In the 2023/2024 season, the Varsity team won the Sunset League, were number 1 in California and ranked number 1 in the Nation during their entire season. This 3rd season was the first CIF season for the sport. There were no playoffs in this inaugural CIF year. In the 4th season, Fall 2024, there were 3 teams! Due to the popularity of the sport, NHHS has a Frosh Soph, JV and Varsity team.
Below is important information for the Varsity parents and players regarding the Chargers' Invitational Tournament on August 23rd-24th.
The schedule for the first day of the Chargers' Invitational has been posted. All games take place at the Chargers' complex located at 3333 Susan St., Costa Mesa. We play Friday, August 23 against Roosevelt at 5 p.m. on field 1 and against Classical Academy at 6:15 p.m.on field 2. We are considered the away team for both games so the girls should wear their white jerseys but make sure to bring their blue jerseys too just in case the other team makes a mistake.
After pool play Friday night, the 16 teams will be split up into two 8-team brackets. The schedule for Saturday depends on how we do Friday. If we lose both games Friday, we will play in the lower bracket on Saturday which begins in the morning with the final beginning at 1:30 p.m. If we win both our games on Friday, we will play in the upper bracket beginning at 1:30 p.m. with the championship game at 5:45 p.m.
